Fall 2023 Series: Indigenous Knowledge, Cultures, and Futurities

Dr. Woloshyn’s North American Indigenous Music Seminar (NAIMS) will be hosting a number of special guests. All events begin at 7pm and will end between 8 and 8:30pm. Some guests will be virtual.

The following events are free and open to the public:

Sept 6 – Seneca singer and dancer Alan Dowdy will provide music while dancers demonstrate Seneca and Haudenosaunee dances. Location: Merson Courtyard (Cohon). Inclement weather location: Center for Student Diversity & Inclusion (Cohon Center)

Sept 20 – Powwows are contemporary social gatherings for Indigenous Peoples to showcase dancing, singing, and craftsmanship while affirming relationships between Indigenous Peoples and with non-Indigenous guests. Mike Simms and friends from the Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center will demonstrate various types of powwow dances with guest dancers wearing their striking regalia. Location: The Cut (in front of the fence). Inclement weather location: Center for Student Diversity & Inclusion (Cohon Center)

Sept 27 – Violist and composer Melody McKiver (Obishikokaang Lac Seul First Nation), musicologist Rena Roussin (Métis/settler), and pianist and ethnomusicologist Renata Yazzie (Diné). discuss Indigenous Classical music. A2, CFA. If you’d like to attend the event virtually, register here.

  

Oct 4 – Lee and Earl Dingus from the Echoes of the Four Directions will demonstrate Native American flute traditions and discuss other Indigenous cultural practices. Location: Center for Student Diversity & Inclusion (Cohon Center)

Oct 11 – Mobéy Lola Irizzary (they/she) discusses their compositions, performances, and sonic/visual disruptions and celebrations. Based in Brooklyn, they hail from the Puerto Rican diaspora in Hartford, CT, and are a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation. She is one of the co-founders and the lead composer for Las Mariquitas, the world’s first Queer and Trans centered Salsa band. A2, CFA. Mobéy will join us via Zoom.

Nov 8 – Watch Seneca filmmaker Jason Corwin’s film Denying Access about Water Protectors at Standing Rock and Seneca Territory. Q&A with the director will follow the 90-min documentary. Location: A2, CFA (basement). Jason will join us via Zoom.

Nov 15 – A panel discussion on Indigenous and Métis Futurisms. Guests include Johnnie Jae of A Tribe Called Geek, writer and educator Chelsea Vowel (co-host of Métis in Space podcast and author of Buffalo is the New Buffalo), and Dr. Karyn Recollet at the University of Toronto writing about urban spaces, Indigenous dance-makers, more-than-human kinships, and Indigenous futurity. Location: A2, CFA. The panel will join us via Zoom.
